July 6, 2026: This summer on July 17, one of the world's oldest stories returns to the global spotlight with the highly anticipated U.S. release of The Odyssey, Academy Award-winning filmmaker Christopher Nolan's sweeping adaptation of Homer's legendary epic. Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus (Ulysses), alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, and Jon Bernthal, the film is already being hailed as one of the most anticipated cinematic events of 2026.
Yet long before Nolan's cameras captured the journey of the ancient Greek hero across Greece, Italy, Morocco, Malta, Iceland, and beyond, the story of Ulysses had already found a home in one remarkable city: Lisbon.
To celebrate the enduring connection between the legendary voyager and Portugal's capital, Tivoli Avenida Liberdade Lisbon is inviting travelers to embark on their own modern-day odyssey through a new immersive tasting experience, Voyages & Vintages, hosted at the hotel's recently opened 1933 Wine & Spirits Collection by Cellar 47.
According to a centuries-old Portuguese legend, Ulysses, the hero of Homer's The Odyssey, sailed beyond the Mediterranean after the Trojan War and arrived at the mouth of the Tagus River, where he founded a settlement known as Olisipo—today's Lisbon.
While historians regard the story as mythology rather than historical fact, the legend became deeply woven into Portugal's cultural identity. For generations, Lisbon has celebrated Ulysses as its mythical founder, embracing the themes that define both the city and Homer's epic: exploration, resilience, discovery, and the courage to venture into the unknown.
These themes are reflected throughout the historic Tivoli Avenida Liberdade Lisbon, including the hotel's striking 1957 lobby mural by Risques Pereira depicting scenes inspired by Ulysses and The Odyssey. The artwork serves as a visual reminder that visitors are standing in a city whose legendary origins are linked to one of literature's greatest travelers.
Since opening its doors in 1933, Tivoli Avenida Liberdade Lisbon has stood as one of Portugal's most distinguished luxury hotels. Located on Lisbon's prestigious Avenida da Liberdade, the landmark property combines timeless elegance, rich cultural heritage, exceptional gastronomy, and contemporary luxury experiences that celebrate the spirit of Lisbon.
"The story of Ulysses is ultimately about the transformative power of a journey," said Jorge Silva, Wine Director of Tivoli Avenida Liberdade Lisbon. "As guests arrive in Lisbon from around the world, they become part of that same tradition of exploration. Our Voyages & Vintages wine tasting experience allows them to experience Portugal through its landscapes, flavors, and stories while connecting with one of the city's most enduring legends."
Inspired by the mythical voyage of Ulysses, Voyages & Vintages invites guests on a curated tasting journey across Portugal's most celebrated wine regions.
Hosted in the sophisticated setting of the hotel's rooftop 1933 Wine & Spirits Collection by Cellar 47, the experience guides participants through a series of exceptional wines that reflect the diversity of Portugal's terroir.
Each tasting is accompanied by storytelling that connects Portugal's maritime heritage, Lisbon's legendary origins, and the timeless themes of The Odyssey.
Guests are encouraged to view the hotel's Odyssey-inspired mural before ascending to the rooftop, creating a seamless narrative experience that begins with myth and culminates with a sensory exploration of Portugal's wines.
Like Ulysses, the legendary Greek hero, embark on a voyage of discovery and return. Through four carefully selected wines, Voyages & Vintages invites guests to follow his maritime adventures, exploring the places, challenges, and encounters that shaped his journey.
The experience unfolds in four chapters, with each wine representing a pivotal stop on Ulysses' legendary voyage, guiding guests through the story one pour at a time. Below are the four chapters of the experience:
As Ulysses ventured farther from home, he reached the land of the Cyclopes, where he faced the giant Polyphemus. It was a test of wit and determination, proving that intelligence can overcome strength. Born from the volcanic landscapes of Pico Island, Terras de Lava Branco reflects the character of this episode. Its aromas of tropical and citrus fruits are framed by freshness, minerality, and a distinctive volcanic identity. Like the island of the Cyclops, it is a wine shaped by powerful natural forces.
Legend tells that after years of travel, Ulysses arrived on the Portuguese coast and helped found the city that would become Lisbon. This chapter celebrates discovery and the excitement of reaching new lands. Casal Sta. Maria Pêndulo embodies the Atlantic spirit of Lisbon. Rich aromas of stone fruit are complemented by subtle saline and pastry notes. Its freshness and texture evoke the meeting point between land and sea, making it the perfect wine to mark the arrival on a new shore.
Among Ulysses' most famous trials was the temptation of the Sirens, whose enchanting song lured sailors from their course. Casal Sta. Maria 3000 Rosas captures that same sense of allure. Pale salmon in color, it offers aromas of peach, subtle minerality, and delicate oak notes. Fresh and refined, with a lingering saline touch, it is a wine that charms from the first sip.
After years of adventures, temptations, and trials, Ulysses finally returned home to Ithaca. Changed by his experiences, he arrived wiser and stronger, completing one of the greatest journeys ever told. Justino's Madeira Boal 10 Years Old is a fitting finale. Its notes of toffee, caramel, dark chocolate, dried fruits, and spice reflect the depth that comes with time and experience. Rich and warming, it brings the voyage to a memorable close, celebrating the reward of reaching home.
Voyages & Vintages invites you to follow the route of Ulysses through Portugal's islands and coast, discovering a story told through wine, one glass at a time.

The launch comes as worldwide excitement grows for Nolan's adaptation of The Odyssey, scheduled for theatrical release on July 17, 2026. The production marks Nolan's first feature since the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer and is the first major motion picture filmed entirely using IMAX film cameras.
For travelers inspired by the film's themes of adventure, homecoming, and discovery, Lisbon offers a uniquely authentic connection to the story. Few destinations can claim a direct legendary association with Odysseus himself, making the Portuguese capital a natural pilgrimage site for literature lovers, film enthusiasts, history buffs, and cultural travelers alike.
At Tivoli Avenida Liberdade Lisbon, guests can immerse themselves in that narrative while enjoying one of Europe's most iconic luxury hotels—where classical mythology, Portuguese heritage, contemporary hospitality, and world-class wine converge.
